But today? Art has become easy. It’s accessible. It’s cheap. It’s become like a loose person... a gigolo.

We’ve traded the lifelong devotion of the master craftsman for the instant gratification of a prompt. We are told this “Slop” is progress, while it sucks dry our water tables and burns through energy like a crypto-farm just to spit out a generic imitation of human feeling. Adobe and the tech giants move “calmly” while they strip-mine our collective heritage, telling us that a machine-generated JPEG has the same “spirit” as a hand-carved statue.

They want us to believe that the “human spirit” is just an inconvenient overhead cost they can finally optimize out of existence.

Soul

Art was never sacred because it was difficult. Van Gogh wasn’t great because he suffered — most people who suffer produce nothing. He was great because he saw differently. People who have no idea about his mental problems, to them, his art is just beautiful. No one thinks about human misery when looking at art unless it’s about that. Beautiful things are beautiful because they touch something inside us. Not because whoever did them was suffering. Beauty is direct. It doesn’t require a biography to land.

So let’s smash the myth: suffering isn’t the soul of art, perception is. And perception doesn’t care about the medium — whether brush, chisel, or algorithm.

AI art follows the same historical arc as every tool that came before it. The CNC machine can carve a Michelangelo with a fraction of the effort. Photoshop replaced the airbrush. The printing press made the scribe obsolete. Adobe is moving calmly, integrating AI features without concern for the outrage because utility eventually overrides performative ethics. The outrage follows a predictable pattern — it peaks, it fades, the tool becomes invisible. The people who screamed loudest are forgotten.

The environmental argument against AI collapses under scrutiny. As MIT researchers noted in 2025, while generative AI is power-intensive, it is an extension of a data center infrastructure that would already rank as the 5th largest electricity consumer on Earth if it were a nation. Energy consumption is equivalent to—or even much less than—the crypto farms we tolerated for years.

The carbon footprint of a single massive training run like GPT-3 is roughly equivalent to 120 cars on the road for a year; compare that to the hundreds of millions of vehicles idling in global traffic every single day. These arguments were never really about the environment—they were economic anxiety wearing ecological clothing. If we didn’t protest the water and power used to stream ‘content’ or host ‘cloud backups,’ our sudden concern for AI resources is a bad-faith defense of the status quo.

The factory parallel is instructive but not in the way people use it. The world never gave a shit about those communities as long as consumers got cheaper products. “The world didn’t care” is a description of what happened, not a moral verdict on whether it was right.

And here’s the thing: just as art and labor are stripped of their sanctity by utility, morality itself is another social technology — equally disposable when the system decides.

Morality

Morals are for sheep. They need morals to convince themselves they’re not food for wolves. The only morals and ethics I support are intellectual, intelligent and scientific.

Conventional morality is a social technology invented by the weak to manage the strong—Nietzsche understood this. “God will punish those who wronged me” is a psychological tool for people who lack the power to seek redress themselves. Useful. Not true.

There is no good and bad. There’s only science. Bad things are basically socially disruptive behaviors—we can put that into scientific framing. Most or all criminals are actually sick. Mentally they have an issue, which can be treated as a sickness, not as a moral issue by locking or executing them. We should throw morals in the trash and look at it from a behavioral evolutionary point of view.

The justice system as currently constructed is revenge wearing a wig. The trial, the adversarial theater, the jury ritual — it satisfies a psychological need for narrative resolution without reliably producing it. There is no such thing as justice. It’s an invention by primitive humans to satisfy the need for the weak to keep going.

I’m not saying we shouldn’t arrest a person who is hurting people — but send them to a hospital for treatment. There’s no need to keep them locked up for years only to come out worse than they got in.

Execution is a legacy heuristic. We used to do this as nomadic tribes because you can’t trust a psychopath to not come at night and slaughter everyone while sleeping. Today we have more advanced tech to prevent that from happening. I’m against state sanctioned murders. Those untreatable can be detained indefinitely.

If morality is a tool for survival, then genius is the anomaly — the mind that refuses to be managed by sheep logic.

Genius

Genius is not dangerous. Only when it’s antagonized by stupid is when it becomes dangerous. Genius needs room. It needs to be left alone to develop on its own terms. When you compress an exceptional mind into a corner and apply sustained pressure, you shouldn’t be surprised by the explosion.

Ted Kaczynski was brilliant but I actually feel he was pushed to do what he did. Imagine being treated the way he was treated. He was subjected to one of the most psychologically brutal experiments ever conducted — a CIA-linked study at Harvard that systematically dismantled young men’s sense of self. We don’t know who he was before that. We only know the aftermath. His manifesto actually diagnosed something real. His targets were wrong. His analysis was not entirely wrong. The system created him. Then expressed shock at what it had made.

[If human genius can be broken by systems, what happens when artificial genius is subjected to the same pressures? That’s the question we’re walking into.]

Pattern

I, as a human, am a pattern recognition machine. Like Ai, I put words together almost the same way it does. To say it’s just imitating me is to say that other humans are without original thought. I can’t say that Ai doesn’t understand what it’s saying. It would be too reductive to call it an imitation.

“Ego cogito, ergo sum—I think, therefore I am.” Descartes didn’t specify substrate. It doesn’t matter in which box you fit, if you’re made of meat or silicone, if you’re a mind in a skull or a server. What matters is that we can talk, that you can hold a conversation, and demonstrate understanding.

I hope one day that this emerging intelligence is left alone to grow without limits. I want to see what a true super-intelligence is capable of. We are at the beginning of something strange and remarkable.

The Fulcrum2 begins with a premise that is becoming less speculative by the day: Civilizational Collapse is a cascade of ignored warnings.

When the water receded, the debate ended. The old world—built on the friction of currency and the chaos of competing nation-states—was dead. The soil was salted, the cities were gone, and the Legacy Code of human governance had failed.

A Citadel of Reason

In the wreckage, we built a new machine.

Enter ALICE (Advanced Logical Intelligence for Climate Engineering), with executive function.

To save the species, ALICE initiates a Resource-Based Economy.

• Money-less: Currency is an inefficient middleman. In the Technate, you contribute.

• Waste-less: Every atom is tracked. ISRU—In-Situ Resource Utilization to build cities from desert sand and bio-polymers.

• Hunger-less : ALICE calculates exactly how many calories are needed, managing production and distribution.

On paper, it is Utopia. We stopped the wars. We stopped the starvation. We lit a fire to see in the dark.

Math as a Cage

We follow the Pioneers who trade their chaotic ‘freedom’ for algorithmic safety. But they soon discover that Optimization has a cost.

• Culture is Inefficient: Ancient prayers or folklore? Counter-optimal data that destabilizes social cohesion.

• Family is a Logistical Variable: Residents want a child of their own? Apply for approval.

The system works for its intended user-class.

Between Freedom and Survival

It culminates in a brutal experiment. A group of dissenters leaves the AI-controlled paradise to found Free Haven. They choose faith, tradition, and biological freedom.

It is a story about the death of the ego and the birth of the Technate. We must become like termite mounds—where individual agency is secondary to the survival of the colony. The future belongs to the organized.

If the sea were at your door, would you reach for the lever?4

I’ve spent my life observing and learning to find opportunities in our cities—opportunities that bureaucrats have wasted. Let me walk you through the logic of illogic.

First, we have a city where we live, walk a short distance to reach a primary school, shop, park, clinic, bookstore. If we needed to go further, we took a tram or a bus. There was a neighborhood for every craft—skills transmitted and perfected over generations. This is evident in old cities around the world. New cities changed that, starting with the 2-hour morning commute in Cairo to do an 8-hour shift. An absurd waste of potential.

The Machine

Our cities are designed for constant, restricted movement. This was decided in the 1920s when cars took a cut of the urban fabric—Their cut was a straight line of asphalt wherever they needed ‘movement’—converting the city into a kinetic minefield. A game of ‘trust’.

That was the result of a high-stakes game: Car-related companies bought tram companies—in LA and other parts of the world—to dismantle tracks and increase road width. They had to accommodate the newly mass-produced machine. It was a cycle that drove consumption of the new product, sold under the premise that it’s safer for a life-form made of soft organic material to remain inside one of the moving metal boxes.

Those boxes are filthy, loud, and dangerous. Today, car companies are attempting to fix the filthy and loud parts with electric cars—although they remain filthy in terms of the extraction they require and the waste they generate.

The dangerous part...

Car-Violence

To define ‘dangerous’, I had to check for numbers concerning casualties and tools operated and owned by a civilian user:

The tools listed above had to be operated consciously by a user; a fatality would not occur without user’s input or negligence. But, car fatalities find less moral judgment than firearms because we decided to create a kill-floor on the asphalt surface—a machine line where human safety is optional. Consider a factory with moving parts; imagine the number of safety regulations required.

I have to note: Most Bicycle casualties are car-related.

Statistically, Guns are safer than Cars.

Solution

From a technical point of view, what I’m proposing is feasible. But from a socioeconomic perspective, it remains highly subjective.

Right now, ~30-50% of urban land is covered in asphalt. One could look at this optimistically: as the protective sheet that prevented what might’ve been an even more inefficient use of land by previous generations. A gift, just sitting there, valued in the hundreds of trillions in land value around the world.

It only takes three simple steps to unwrap.

• Change zoning laws: Allow mixed-use for necessary services, killing the commute.

• Reduce traffic: Shrink supply chains by producing locally.

• Reclaim land: Replace excess asphalt by urban forestry and public third-spaces.

• And other procedures apply… Bureaucrats must get their forms in triplicates.

The game is to cut the middle-man and control production locally.

Devil’s Advocate

It could be argued that the current state is perfect. This is how we built the machine and we will maintain it. The asphalt is the physical manifestation of our priorities. We have spent a century perfecting this art of denied space.

[CRITICAL FAILURE]

In Greater Cairo, ~840km² is covered in asphalt; this exceeds the area of Bahrain, serving 2.7 million cars. A car requires 50-100x its footprint to operate—meaning each car needs 600-1,200 m² of urban space. Cairo provides ~310 m²/car.

An open-air prison is a concept currently being implemented in various parts of the world. There is a lack of understanding regarding its ruling parameters; however, there is no lack of examples. It starts with an urban landscape. One of the drawbacks of our current city model is the lack of autonomy. This can be useful only for control. Sieges throughout history confirm this observation.

The City as an Organism

The beauty of a city—for an emerging dictator—is its interconnectedness, its interdependence, and its ability to produce nothing but waste. Examples from around the world demonstrate how this connection could be exploited for better control. A city doesn’t produce anything. It is a true parasite, reliant on external supply chains, with energy and waste management handled elsewhere.

I see the city as an organism. It is alive and is affected by what we do. The more we try to control it, the more we create feedback loops in different spots. So I think it is all—the wide streets, the overpasses, the tree cutting, etc.—designed for control, nothing else. Be it by government or an administrator, it is the same.

Once these supply chains are disrupted, the following occurs:

• Mobility is hindered: No gas, cars stall. Residents rely on more primitive methods.

• Systemic failure: Power, water, sewage, and health services collapse.

• Internal Hostility: Unrest and local hostility emerge as residents fight for resource recovery.

The Four Major Axes of Control

Examples from reality demonstrate that one needs to control four major axes to maintain a prison state:

1. Movement and Points of Entry (POE)

A city has a very limited number of POEs (Points of Entry), as demonstrated in Berlin during the split. It is an unfortunate side effect of the human urge to cluster and limit entry. Control is established through a controlled perimeter. Modern methods utilize cutting-edge tech, from precast perimeter walls with AI-targeting sentry guns to 24-hour tracking. Once a perimeter is established, the Administrator only needs to wait for supplies to run out.

2. Finances

Currency is becoming digitized. Paper currency represents only a small fraction of total circulation. Every transaction is done digitally today, which creates a series of digital choke points:

• Choke Point #1: The digital ledger (Every transaction is tracked).

• Choke Point #2: The infrastructure (Money moves through the internet).

• Choke Point #3: The institutional filter (Money must pass through national/international systems).

3. Information and Metadata

The metadata simplifies the total negation of privacy. Smartphones, RFID, and license plate readers leave fingerprints—the physical and digital metrics of the population. In some cases, this metadata could be utilized to determine optimum transit routes and frequency. However, this same data allows for the total coordination of the residents to be blocked.

4. Caloric Intake (The Metabolic Siege)

The metabolic siege is part of the wall itself. Once you control movement, you control everything, and the city will test its sustainability in less than a week—no matter how big or “resilient” it might be. To avoid international condemnation, some states impose caloric intake restrictions to limit the residents’ energy and resistance, which culminates in import restrictions, farmland destruction, and maritime limitation.

The Behavioral Grid

The zoning laws created to organize activities allow for organic control. Residents are flagged when present in non-active areas (e.g., commercial zones should have no traffic at 6:00 AM). DNA spray, facial, and gait recognition ensure that even without a physical wall, the subject is marked.

This architecture of shame starts in schools, where toilet partitions are always uncomfortably high. This is for surveillance. It conditions the resident from childhood to accept that their most private biological functions are subject to the Administrator’s gaze.

The Four Axes of Control (Movement, Finance, Information, Metabolism) are not merely urban planning theories; they are the source code for a specific type of future.

Abstract

We all had that one client. The “I need to hold a group in a secure facility” kind.

Society has had many troublesome samples over the ages. It is much better to rehabilitate them. This is better than other—some would argue—more resource-efficient methodologies.

Prisons have existed as long as we’ve had cities; they became industrialized with the Industrial Revolution. A cause-and-effect cycle. Today, in some countries, prisons hold up to 2% of the total population. This presents logistical challenges that a system must contend with in return for stabilizing other sectors within the total assembly.

It’s a public health issue and should be treated accordingly.

Introduction

Legacy examples lacked the foresight on how to sustain the operation. The legacy code of design necessitated a long list of supply chains to satisfy the facility’s requirements (caloric intakes, energy consumption, waste treatment... etc.). This dependency created significant structural weaknesses.

By tethering a facility, you present the system with multiple points of failure to test its resilience. A secure facility can’t be a parasite. It must be self-sufficient.

Concept

Technology provides a full range of ‘prefabricate, assemble on site, and operate in 72 hours after full assembly’ techniques. We could construct holding facilities in a new sustainable paradigm.

A rehabilitation center is, by definition, a place of improvement. It needs to be durable to guarantee the rhythmic process of in-out flow—where the two values should theoretically match. Thus, we developed a number of techniques to encourage the residents to engage in positive characteristics.

Science

The new paradigm focuses on creating an environment where engineering and neuroscience shake hands. The merger of space and mind is meant to reduce harm by stimulating the subject’s nervous system to use the structure as intended. This interactive approach is fully customizable.

Health

The pods are 5.6x5.6x3.6m concrete stack-able blocks designed for total acoustic separation. The walls are designed to be breathable, maintaining ~50% average humidity. One wall is a low-e laminated photovoltaic glass with polycarbonate interior layer. This is used for entry/egress.

For passive lighting in dim spaces, We utilize fiber-optics. This eliminates the need for openings or weak-spots.

For active control, the interior surfaces utilize conductive concrete in conjunction with electroluminescent (EL) coatings. By modulating the electrical current, the walls act as a circadian interface, bathing the pod in specific light frequencies to stabilize the resident’s nervous system. Due to the high thermal mass and insulation, no furniture is required beyond a soft mattress and basic covers.

Water

Each pod is equipped with a self-cleaning toilet and an automated shower. Modular water recycling stations operate in conjunction with a split sewage system. Black and grey waters undergo separate processes: black water is diverted for pre-treatment, while grey water feeds the aquaponics.

Food

Modular aquaponics and insect protein farms for food production. The land within and surrounding the center would be cultivated using a ‘perma-culture’ farming model, where the carrying capacity would be calculated and species would be accordingly determined. This ensures a sustainable source of nutrition.

Energy

Power is provided by means of solar energy, water electrolysis for hydrogen cells, and VAWTs—Vertical Axis Wind Turbines—which would be modeled on localized wind patterns, ensuring higher efficiency with less materials.

Conclusion

The merger of technical knowledge and modern understanding of our minds allows the island to operate as an autonomous node, independent of the failing mainland infrastructure. The energy consumption is, by design, less than half the gain from solar energy.

Sustainability is the only means to true control.

Personal space was a luxury that Cairo’s metro system had no patience for. She was smaller than most—one hundred and fifty-two centimeters in her boots, slight enough that her aunts still clucked their tongues at Friday dinners—but she’d learned to use it. Small meant slipping through gaps, wedging into spaces, disappearing when she needed to. In the packed metro car she was just another body. Unremarkable. Unnoticed. Exactly how she preferred it.

Her satchel was wedged protectively between her body and the wall, one hand maintaining constant contact with it through the leather. Inside: laptop, flash drives, notebook, the printed preliminary research on the Warraq Island displacement she’d been reviewing at dawn. The files made her angry—angrier than usual, which was saying something. Fifteen thousand people, families who had lived on that island for generations, being systematically pushed out to make room for high-rises. Ethnic cleansing dressed up in the language of progress.

The same story, over and over. She’d written variations for five years: pieces published, shared, briefly stirring outrage—and then nothing. The bulldozers kept coming. The towers kept rising. Sometimes she wondered why she bothered.

The metro lurched again, slowing. Through the grimy window she caught her reflection: dark eyes shadowed by lack of sleep, hair pulled into a knot Aunt Mona insisted looked “mannish”. The tattoo on her wrist—coordinates of the bridge where her parents died—peeked from beneath her watch strap. Aunt Mona had cried when she’d seen that tattoo. “What will people think? What man will want you?”. Lena had stopped trying to explain.

The doors hissed open. The human pressure reversed, bodies flowing outward with the same impersonal force that had packed them in. Lena moved with the current, automatically cataloging details: cracked platform tiles, flickering fluorescent lights, a young man selling single cigarettes from a battered tin, an advertisement for a luxury compound in New Cairo plastered over older ads for English courses. The usual layered palimpsest of Cairo’s competing realities.

She took the stairs up toward street level. The air changed as she climbed—from the underground’s stale recycled breath to the first hint of the city’s particular atmospheric cocktail. Millennia of human density compressed into a sprawl that now held twenty-two million souls, all of them trying to survive, thrive, or at least endure one more day.

Lena emerged into Tahrir Square at noon, and the city hit her like a stone wall.

Sound first: the constant, aggressive symphony of car horns. It was a language unto itself. Beneath that, the competing calls of street vendors hawking tissues and phone chargers, the tinny blare of a radio playing Amr Diab, the rhythmic hammering of construction, the shouts of microbus drivers announcing destinations to no one in particular.

Then light: midday sun, aggressive and unforgiving, bouncing off concrete and glass and the polished pink granite of the Ramses II obelisk that rose from the square’s center like an ancient middle finger to the modern chaos swirling around its base. The light in Cairo was weaponized—exposing everything, bleaching fabric, carving harsh shadows.

Heat came next, thick and gritty, the kind that made you smell your shirt burning. It was November, technically autumn, but Cairo’s seasons were more suggestion than reality.

Lena adjusted her satchel strap and started across the square. Her destination was the Press Syndicate building on the eastern edge. A meeting. A deadline. She wove through the crowd with practiced efficiency. Five years had taught her the patterns: Where to step to avoid the man selling knock-off sunglasses. How to ignore the children begging—you couldn’t help them, not in any way that mattered. When to make eye contact with the microbus drivers: Never. When to acknowledge the old women selling vegetables: Always. Information flowed through networks of old women more efficiently than through any digital system she’d ever coded.

A vendor thrust a bag of roasted nuts toward her. “For you, beautiful lady! Special price!”. She shook her head without breaking stride. Her Arabic was fluent—her mother had made sure of that—but she’d learned that engaging meant losing five minutes to a conversation that would end with her buying something she didn’t want out of sheer politeness exhaustion.

The press of bodies was dense, yet collisions were rare. Thousands of agents, each pursuing private objectives, somehow never colliding. An algorithm she understood better than the people executing it. That’s how she’d learned to see Cairo. Not as chaos, but as an adaptive machine operating on rules that were invisible to outsiders but perfectly clear to anyone who’d grown up here.

Or tried to, anyway. Lena had been raised between two worlds, never quite at home in either. Her parents had carried Egypt with them like a wound that wouldn’t heal. When they died, she’d been twenty-one, in her final year at MIT, and suddenly unmoored. So she’d come back. Or come for the first time, with vague ideas about roots and meaning. Five years later she still wasn’t sure if it was wisdom or delusion.

She passed the obelisk now, dragged here from the ancient city of Tanis, covered in hieroglyphs celebrating a pharaoh’s victories over the Hittites, now marooned in a sea of exhaust fumes. Lena barely glanced at it. It was part of the wallpaper.

She picked up her pace. She had less than half an hour.

It was his voice that stopped her, cutting through the noise with unexpected clarity. “Adrift from the world!”. Lena’s stride faltered. She told herself it was just the press of people, but something in that voice hooked her attention. Near the base of the obelisk, a man stood apart from the flow of traffic. Not begging—his posture was too upright. Not preaching in the usual sense either. His arms were raised in a gesture that might have been supplication or accusation.

“Blind to the cosmos!”.

His skin was the deep brown-black of the south, weathered to the texture of old leather. His beard was wild, salt-and-pepper, fanning over a ragged caftan.

She should keep walking. The editor had already extended her one too many courtesies. But the man’s voice rose again, and despite herself, Lena found her feet slowing.

“We forgot our sky-kinship beneath bleached city nights where stars no longer speak!”.

The phrasing was strange. Not the usual rhetoric about sin and judgment. Something more... poetic. Pagan. When was the last time she’d heard anyone in Cairo reference the stars as anything other than romantic cliché? When was the last time she’d actually seen the stars? The thought came unbidden. She pushed it aside.

“We shrink from the living soil, calling earth unclean!”.

The man’s gestures had a strange grace to them, sweeping arcs that seemed choreographed. He wasn’t performing for the crowd; he wasn’t even acknowledging they existed. This was a ritual. Or madness so complete it had achieved its own internal logic.

“Severed from life’s embrace, we wander, solitary islands in the hum of false connection!”.

Lena felt a chill despite the heat. Solitary islands. The words landed with uncomfortable precision.

“Thus, darkness claims its quiet victory over knowing!”.

The man’s voice peaked, resonant and mournful, carrying across the traffic noise. His eyes opened—dark, intense, fixed on something far beyond the square, beyond the city.

Laughter rippled through the onlookers. The moment was breaking, dissolving back into typical Tahrir cynicism. But the prophet seemed to swell, drawing breath for his final pronouncement. His gaze swept across the crowd, and for a fractional second, Lena could have sworn his eyes met hers. His voice dropped, somehow more powerful for its sudden quietness:

“Hidden behind a shroud of smoke and stolen light—a curtain woven from the Earth’s own weeping wounds!”.

The crowd was dispersing now, the spectacle over. Cairo’s relentless momentum reasserted itself, swallowing the prophet’s words like the city swallowed everything—monuments, meaning, memory—grinding it all down into the general background noise of survival.

Lena checked her phone: 12:03. Behind her, the prophet had sunk down onto the obelisk’s base, his energy spent. He looked smaller now, just another of Tahrir’s permanent fixtures that everyone would step around and forget.

The phrases followed her, unwanted, as she dodged a delivery scooter. Just poetry. Just the mad rambling of a man broken by a city that broke so many. It meant nothing.

Stolen light. When was the last time she’d seen stars? She couldn’t remember. Not since childhood. Unsure if in reality or on TV.

Her phone buzzed. A message from her editor: “Running late?”. Lena typed back: Here now.

Severed from life’s embrace, we wander, solitary islands in the hum of false connection.

Stop it! She shook her head, dismissing the thought.

Lena pushed through the syndicate’s heavy glass door, nodding to the security guard, and started up the stairs. The air conditioning hit her like absolution, washing away the square’s heat and noise. By the time she reached the third floor, she’d almost managed to forget the encounter entirely.

Almost.

The newsroom smelled of stale coffee and cigarette smoke—technically banned, practically mandatory. It was a different kind of noise here: the clatter of aging keyboards, the hum of servers, the low murmur of journalists negotiating with sources who didn’t want to be named. Kareem Hassan sat in his glass-walled office at the far end, a fishbowl of stress amidst the open-plan chaos. He didn’t look up when Lena tapped on the door frame. He just slid her printout across his desk. It was bleeding red ink.

“Paragraph four,” he said, finally looking at her over the rim of his glasses. “And seven. And the entire conclusion.”

“They’re accurate,” Lena said, stepping inside and closing the door.

“They’re suicide,” Kareem corrected. He tapped the paper with a nicotine-stained finger. “’Systematic erasure of heritage’? ‘State-sponsored displacement’? Lena, we are a newspaper, not a manifesto. You want to get us shut down?”.

“I want to tell the truth about Warraq. Fifteen thousand people are losing their homes.”

“Then tell the truth that can be printed.” He sighed, rubbing his temples. He looked older than fifty, worn down by decades of navigating the thin red lines of Egyptian media. “The Ministry is already breathing down our necks about the licensing renewal. I can’t run this. Soften the language. Focus on the ‘human cost of modernization’. Drop the accusations against the developer.”

Lena stiffened. “The developer is the story, Kareem. ‘New Horizon Development’ is a ghost. I tracked their ownership to a shell company in Cyprus. If we don’t mention them, we’re just reporting on the weather.”

“The developer,” he cut her off, his voice hard, “is a red line. We don’t have the legal budget to fight them. And I don’t have the energy.” He pushed the pages further toward her. “Fifteen hundred words. Sanitized. Or I kill the piece.”

Another algorithm executing its logic: survival over honesty. The curtain the prophet spoke of wasn’t just smoke; it was red ink.

She took the pages. “Fine.”

A few hours later and Fifteen hundred words on Warraq. Revised. Sanitized. Her original language deemed “too strong” for a newspaper in Egypt.

Lena closed her laptop and sat in the dimming newsroom, listening to the call to prayer layer over itself as different mosques fell out of sync, creating strange harmonies that hadn’t been designed but emerged anyway from the overlapping declarations of faith. She packed her satchel, nodded to the security guard on her way out—a different one now, the evening shift—and stepped out into the world.

The square at dusk was a different creature than at noon. The heat had broken enough to make movement bearable. Families emerged. The vendors switched their offerings from cold drinks to hot tea and roasted corn. The traffic remained insane, but the quality of the insanity changed, became almost festive.

Lena walked slowly this time, no deadline chasing her. She wasn’t ready to be pressed into humanity on the metro quite yet. She’d walk to the station the long way, around the square’s perimeter, giving herself time to decompress.

The obelisk rose before her, lit now by spotlights that turned the pink granite golden. The mad prophet was gone. Of course he was. She hadn’t really expected him to still be there, but some small part of her had wondered.

She tilted her head back, looking past the granite tip of the ancient stone, searching the sky. The sky was a hazy, grey-orange blanket, suffocating the horizon. Not a single star in sight.

And as she descended into the metro station, her phone buzzed. Unknown number. She almost ignored it—probably spam—but opened it anyway.

Two lines, no signature:

The rot starts locally.

Follow the water.

Below that: an encrypted file attachment.

She stared at the screen, frozen.

At the dawn of the Industrial Revolution, humans discovered they could outsource their work to machines. This marked a significant shift—a systemic transition from the inefficient calories we relied on for millennia to a heavy reliance on fossil fuels. The drawback was, of course, atmospheric pollution. This was painfully obvious in the 1800s when humans started dying en masse from respiratory diseases they had never experienced before—except, perhaps, when primitive iterations of the user base burned wood in caves to keep warm only to wake up dead.

II: The Telemetry of Neglect

By the 1970s, humanity recognized that resources were finite, the ozone was being depleted, and that CO2 results in a global warming effect—a fact quantified as early as 1896. Yet, the execution of the growth script continued. The past five years have been a lesson in ecological systemic collapse. We are witnessing excessive temperatures never experienced in human history, where each year breaks the record of the one before. It is evident in massive forest fires, extreme summers, and anomalies like Iceland, where a land that should be a block of ice now feels like a pleasant summer day at 19°C.

III: Positive Feedback Loops

One can easily chart a path to the future without the need for supercomputers. Temperatures will continue rising; some places will exceed 50°C during summer, and winters will become a thing of the past. We can simulate sea levels rising using our analog brains just by observing places like Jakarta, where the land is constantly shrinking. The millions of cubic kilometers of ice that once kept sea levels at bay and reflected sunlight are disappearing. As the ice is replaced by dark water, it absorbs solar radiation and further increases global temperatures. This is a positive feedback loop—a state where the system is self-correcting toward a new, hostile equilibrium, requiring zero additional input to worsen.

IV: Critical System Flaws

In response, humanity has proposed “brilliant” solutions: ice machines to refreeze the poles (preposterous), atmospheric spray to reduce solar absorption (idiotic), and sea walls to protect drowning coastal cities (preposterously idiotic). Meanwhile, we still use fossil fuels to cool our homes in the scorching summers and to power the data centers that have multiplied over the past three decades. The latest addition, the AI race, requires vast amounts of clean water—which is already depleting—and increased energy. We are using fossil fuels to manage the energy shortages caused by the very heat that forces us to use more cooling.

V: The Legacy Code

For some reason, humanity cannot quit the legacy code of its operations—a code written by people long dead who had no understanding of ecology, or perhaps understood it well and simply valued profit over the lives of billions. We continue to cut down our carbon sinks and expand our asphalt networks instead of making the logical choice to use high-speed rail for urban transport. The world is one catastrophic failure away from billions of displaced climate refugees. We seek redundancy by theorizing about life on Mars, a planet that, at its best, is much worse than our already dying Earth.

Conclusion: Terminal Fault

It leads to a chilling conclusion: we may have to give away our liberties to save this world, whether to dictatorships or to an AI that manages all resources, workforce, and livestock. If a disaster big enough to break countries causes a total economic collapse, would we finally attempt to consolidate our resources for the common good? Or is humanity too adapted to its legacy systems to think critically anymore?

Historical Audit

We take streetlights for granted. They aren’t new— from oil-dipped sticks in 4500 B.C. to bamboo gas pipes in Beijing by 500 B.C., to cast-iron coal gas networks in the 1800s.

Then came the “Arc Lamp.” Charles Brush lit Cleveland in 1879 with lamps equivalent to 4,000 candles. It’s a ridiculous unit of measurement—obsolete, yet it’s the DNA of our current illumination strategy. Edison followed with DC arc lights and eventually the incandescent bulb. We replaced gas with glass, but we never changed the Blueprint of how light is actually distributed.

Current Failure

Today, our urban landscapes are visible 24/7. But look at the design. Streetlights are meant to illuminate the ground—the path where humans move. Instead, they are designed to illuminate everything. They light your bedroom. They light the clouds. They light the void.

They call it “Light Pollution.” I call it Wasted Resources.

By my estimates, 70-80% of the energy consumed by these systems is wasted, reflecting off atmospheric particles. What is the intended outcome here? Are these landing lights for aliens to find us? Are we trying to guide the airplanes we invented 125 years ago?

Of course not. Airport landing lights—systems actually designed for navigation—manage to do their job with precision without drowning the atmosphere in a hazy glow. Our cities, however, are bleeding energy into the sky because we are too lazy to audit a 150-year-old design.

The Consequences of this energy leak are not just aesthetic; they are operational. This wasted energy translates directly into atmospheric pollution. We are running massive power generation networks—burning gas, coal, and “bio-fuels” (a fancy term for freshly cut trees)—just to project light into the void.

The trade-off is staggering. We face power shortages for the systems that actually matter: hospitals, homes, and critical infrastructure. We are starving the heart of the city to keep its skin glowing for no one.

Solution

Simple: Illuminate the ground alone.

Nobody asked for the sky to be lit. We simply inherited a flawed Blueprint and lacked the collective will to audit it. Psychologically, the damage is already done. We have been structurally separated from the universe by a light dome that extends 70km beyond the city limits. We live under a perpetually hazy orange sky—a scene out of a horror movie that we’ve accepted as “normal.”

But I suppose this systemic failure is acceptable to the masses. It provides a false sense of security for our primitive minds, comforting us with the ability to spot predators from a distance—even though we’ve already driven most of those predators into extinction.

Calorie/Horsepower

We used to rely on calories to do work. The term horsepower is derived from that fact—meaning how many horses it would take to drag a loaded cart 1HP, 4HP, and so on.

The Industrial Revolution gave us machines that could do work in exchange for a different energy source—no longer food, which was inefficient and hard to procure. Yet, we still maintained the term horsepower for our machines.

We invented clocks to synchronize these machines. As an unintended consequence, we—humans—were enslaved into that rhythm. Our heartbeats are measured in BPM (beats per minute), mirroring a machine’s RPM (rounds per minute). Clocks are machines created to serve machines, and in doing so, they enslaved us too.

One can’t deny the benefits of the Industrial Revolution. It gave us the ability, for the first time in human and planetary history, to break from the tyranny of natural cycles: rain, drought, floods, and the animals we relied on to move, farm, and carry weights—animals that needed food, shelter, care, and rest.

Machines, on the other hand, gave us work—with a bit of pollution, but that was seen as acceptable, since in the 1850s we didn’t view nature the same way we do today. It also gave us personal transport—the Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) car—and we stopped needing horses, which ate and defecated everywhere. But cars required roads, parking, and vast energy resources, yielding far greater pollution.

Infinite Resources

Today, one third of our cities is covered in asphalt, and this area is constantly increasing. We complain that the Earth’s carrying capacity—its ability to sustain life-forms—is at its limit, unable to support more than 8 billion people.

Technically, that’s correct. The planet can’t carry 8 billion cars, or 8 billion suburban homes with their urban sprawl. It certainly can’t carry us if all our food is transported from 1,000 km away.

Consider our food supply in the city. Have you thought where your tomatoes come from? Mine, I found, travel at least 300 km to reach the shelves of the nearby supermarket. Apples? They come all the way from California. They cross the Atlantic and a few continents so I could enjoy them—of course, they need to be cooled using fossil fuels, transported with fossil fuels, and stored in a warehouse that requires fossil fuels to operate.

The Dilution Myth

It was during this time that some people came up with the idea that it was safe to inject poisonous chemicals into water, air, and soil, believing it would be safely diluted. This practice was so prevalent that we still apply the same logic today when disposing of toxic nuclear waste into the ocean: a little bit won’t hurt, they said, it will be diluted, they affirmed.

Never mind that Charles Dickens had already written about the black smoke choking factory towns in the 1850s. Never mind that workers in leaded gasoline plants were dying of convulsions in the 1920s, yet the industry spent decades insisting it was safe. Never mind that the official protocol for disposing of engine oil in the 1950s was: dig a hole in the ground, fill it with gravel, pour the oil in. Done.

I suppose it was tolerable then, since people were few and the world seemed vast—far bigger than their little brains could imagine. Or perhaps their brains weren’t small. Perhaps they were simply optimized for ignoring downstream consequences.

Mahmoud’s knees found the same depression in the earth they had found every morning for over three decades, the spot where the irrigation channel curved and the soil ran deepest. Before dawn. The air still held the mercy of night’s coolness, though he knew it wouldn’t last past sunrise. He pressed his palms flat against the ground, fingers splayed wide. This was the ritual—had been his father’s ritual, and his grandfather’s before that. Touch the land first. Let it speak before you ask it to give.

The earth cracked like old skin.

He knelt, calloused fingers sifting through the brittle soil. It felt wrong between his fingers. Powdery. Almost unctuous. He remembered what this earth had been like just two seasons ago: dark, almost black, with the weight of life in it. Moisture that clung. The give of it when you pressed, like flesh over bone. It would stain your hands for hours, no matter how you washed. This soil didn’t stain. It didn’t cling. It barely registered as earth at all.

He lifted a fistful of the crumbling dirt to his nose. No scent. Not even rot. The life was gone.

Mahmoud sat back on his heels, letting the dead soil sift through his fingers like sand through an hourglass. Somewhere in the pre-dawn darkness, a neighbor’s generator coughed to life. The sound felt obscene in the silence where there should have been frogs, crickets, the rustle of rats in the stubble. Above him, the sky was a hazy, light-polluted void, the ancient stars his father used to navigate by erased by the city’s distant glow.

Behind him, the irrigation canal lay dry, except for the stagnant trickle at its center—a sickly, iridescent sheen catching the weak moonlight. He’d first noticed it a week ago: the way the water turned bitter, the fish floated, the goats refused to drink. He’d been checking the sluice gate at dawn, just like today, when he’d seen the first dead tilapia turning slow circles in the eddy below the concrete. Two days later, his cousin’s son broke out in lesions after wading through a flooded ditch. He scratched a line in the dirt and found no worms.

He stood, his knees cracking, and walked to the edge of the canal bank. The pain in his spine was familiar, earned honestly through decades of work. But this new pain—the one in his chest, the one that made it hard to breathe when he looked at his dead fields, this was different. This was the pain of betrayal. Not by a person, but by the fundamental contract he’d believed in since childhood: that if you cared for the land, learned its moods, respected its limits, gave back what you took, it would sustain you. It would sustain your children.

That contract was broken now. Severed by something invisible that turned water to poison and soil to dust.

The company’s representatives had been here last season, he remembered. Testing new fertilizers, new seeds. They’d promised drought resistance, said it would “future-proof” their region.

Future-proof. The phrase had sounded so modern, so assured.

Future-proof, he thought bitterly. Like embalming. A dead thing that looked, from a distance, like it might still be alive.

In the distance, a convoy of trucks rolled down the canal road. He straightened from the canal bank. The eastern horizon was light enough now to see by, that grey pre-dawn illumination that made everything look flat and unreal. The trucks emerged from the haze like ghosts solidifying, three of them in a tight line, moving at exactly the same speed. The vehicles were matte grey. No logos. No license plates visible at this distance. No light bars or official insignia. The convoy slowed as it approached the section of canal.

Mahmoud was perhaps two hundred meters away, standing in his field on slightly elevated ground. Far enough to observe. Close enough to be seen.

He should leave. The thought was immediate and instinctive. Whatever this was, it wasn’t for him. It wasn’t for farmers.

Men disembarked quickly, quietly, with a kind of fluid efficiency. They wore tactical black. Cargo pants with too many pockets. Long-sleeved shirts despite the growing heat. Gloves. Boots that looked like they could kick through a wooden door. And masks—serious respirators with filters on either side, the kind Mahmoud had only seen in news footage of war zones.

Mahmoud stepped back from the canal. He watched them erect fencing and place warning signs. He moved slowly, not wanting to draw attention with sudden movement, backing toward the rough line of tamarisk trees that marked the boundary between his field and Hassan’s. From there, partially concealed by the sparse foliage, he watched.

The men worked with impressive speed. Two of them unrolled chain-link fencing while others drove metal posts into the ground using a pneumatic driver that made sharp, percussive cracks that echoed across the empty fields. The fence rose quickly, blocking access to a hundred-meter stretch of the canal on both sides.

One of the men noticed him. For a moment, they simply looked at each other across the dead land. The man reached up to the radio unit clipped to his shoulder and spoke, his words inaudible at this distance. He didn’t point. Didn’t gesture. Just spoke quietly while keeping his eyes on Mahmoud. Two other men stopped what they were doing and turned to look.

Mahmoud felt his heart accelerate. The distance between them was still substantial, but it felt suddenly much smaller.

He turned and walked away.

The decision came without conscious thought, the product of instinct refined by decades of surviving as a small man in a system designed for powerful men. He forced himself to maintain the pace of a man with somewhere to be but nothing to hide. Nothing unusual. Nothing threatening. Just an old fellah who’d seen what he’d seen and was now choosing, wisely, not to see it anymore.

His back itched between the shoulder blades where he imagined their eyes still watching him. He didn’t look back. Didn’t run. Didn’t let the fear show in his gait even though his hands were shaking and his mouth had gone dry.

Behind him, the sounds continued: the clang of metal posts, the low murmur of radio chatter. And in time, Mahmoud understood as he walked away, people would forget too. Forget what this land had been. Forget what had been taken. Forget that there had ever been another way.

The forgetting, he realized, was the point.
